Trout and char fishing in Vatsfjorden

Vatsfjorden is located 738 metres above sea level in the beautiful mountain village of Vats in Ål, and offers easily accessible fishing for both char and trout, both summer and winter.

There is organised parking along the lake and the road is ploughed even in winter. The water is easily accessible and there are many good fishing spots from the shore, especially on the west side, where the road runs along the shore.

Fishing licence

Day passes from NOK 50, weekly and season passes are also available. Fishing licences can be purchased via inatur.no or in a box opposite Hallingdal Nature and Environment Centre in the middle of Vats.

Fishing rules

Otter fishing is not permitted. The lower part of the water is private and marked with boundary posts, see map below.

Fishing tips

According to local experience, it is best to use flies in the upper part of Vatsfjorden. Otherwise, both worms and lures work well along the shore. There are several accessible fishing spots on the side where the road runs, and early morning and late evening often provide the best conditions.

Directions

Turn off national road 7 at Hallingmøblar and follow Nordbygdvegen for about 16 kilometres towards Vats and the Bergsjø area. There is good signposting all the way. There are organised parking spaces along the lake, and the road is also ploughed in winter.

Accommodation

There are several good accommodation options in the immediate area. Skarslia Apartments and Vats Mountain Lodge are both located a short distance from the Vatsfjord, providing good access to both summer and winter fishing. Here you can stay comfortably with mountain nature right outside your door, and combine your fishing trip with hike, horse riding, cycling or ski by season.
