In the 1930s, several thousand Norwegians went on the loff. They wandered around the country, sleeping in tents or under a bush, selling goods and taking small jobs. Some of them also traveled through Hallingdal. The last of the old land settlers disappeared in the 1980s.
Gotaas also talks about log cabin dwellers such as Josef Helvete, Ture Sølver, and other special individuals who lived alone in small cabins. The lecture examines why some chose a life of solitude, far from other people.
Thor Gotaas is a folk memory researcher and author with a major in folklore from the University of Oslo. He has written a number of books about, among other things, skiers, trappers, Tatars, sailors, runners, and local history.
After the lecture, Tanken Arena will be open with bar, mingling and music.
