The performance is a brave, intimate and humorous confrontation with growing up in Brunstad Christian Church, also known as Smiths venner. Through storytelling, song and reflection, Karin Kilden depicts how all-encompassing preaching can shape thoughts, feelings and self-understanding from early childhood.
Burning out from the Holy Spirit was previewed to a full house and standing ovation during the monologue festival Monofon at Hamar Teater in January 2025, and was later performed in Oslo and Asker in autumn 2025. Kilden is accompanied on stage by pianist Trond Lindheim, and the performance features newly written songs by Hanne T. Asheim. Karina Aase directs.
The performance can be described as a mix of TED talk, revue and self-help, where humour and seriousness go hand in hand. The audience encounters both powerful and recognisable moments, from childhood obsessions and teenage faith crises to rebellion against systems and absurd situations that allow for laughter.
