The hike starts at Varaldset and takes you through beautiful mountain terrain via Hæet and on to Fagerdalen støl. Along the way, the landscape gradually opens up, rewarding you with magnificent views of Hallingskarvet in the west and Reineskarvet in the east. This is the tour for those who want to combine leisurely hiking with local flavours, cultural landscapes and støl traditions.
Hike description
Start at the bridge at the west end of Varaldsetvatnet, where you will find parking facilities. The trail is unmarked, but clearly visible in the terrain. It takes you first over the fence that surrounds Varaldset-stølene, and then on to Hæet, a beautiful mountain ridge where the view really opens up.
The tour continues in easy mountain terrain towards Fagerdalen, where the farm is open during the summer season and at Easter. Here you'll be served rømmegrøt (sour cream porridge) and the local speciality kvikaku (patties), along with other simple dishes and refreshments. The perfect opportunity to take a break and savour the taste of the mountains.
Return the same way.
Tips
You may want to bring a map as the trail is unmarked. Fagerdalen støl is a great place for families with children, and the trip can be combined with a visit to the farm animals and short walks in the surrounding area.
Fagerdalen støl is a living centre with roots dating back hundreds of years. This summer, it's open from 1 July to 24 August from 12:00 to 16:30, and then at weekends until 14 September. Here you can buy and serve genuine, handmade farmhouse food, including freshly made rømmegrøt, made from scratch with milk from our own cows. Here you get an authentic farmhouse experience!
If you want to make the most of your stay, we recommend staying at Skarslia, which is just a short drive from the starting point. Here you'll find both comfortable rooms and cabins, as well as bike and fishing equipment hire. In co-operation with Hestur horse riding tours are also organised in the area.
