Car park
The tour can start wherever you want from Ål town centre, Hallingdal Feriepark or Ål Camping. Here we describe it from the car park at Sundre torg. The car park at Sundre torg is located on the other side of Tingstugu, right in the centre of Ål.
Hike description
From Tingstugu, head east on Sundrevegen, past the shops and out of the town centre. Follow the footpath for approximately 2 km. Just after Sundrevegen no. 155, you need to cross the road and you will enter a wide tractor road/trail. Follow this until you reach Ål Camping.
When you reach the river, follow the path westwards towards Topcamp Hallingdal. This is the most popular part of the trail, and here you'll find several benches, shelters, fitness equipment, swimming spots and fishing spots. The trail is well organised and suitable for most people. If you want a shorter hike, you can turn around at Bråta Idrettsanlegg or walk under the Stasjonsbrua bridge and follow the footpath back to the town centre.
From Topcamp, turn right and follow Myrovegen up towards Sundrevegen. When you reach Sundrevegen, you will first pass the schools. You'll then follow the road past several of Ål's most important cultural monuments. First you meet Eel rod church air, the site of one of Norway's most significant stave churches. Close by is Stave Church Museum with original carvings from the stave church. A little further along the road is Ål church, which still contains details from the old stave church.
From there, follow Sundrevegen back to the city centre and the car park at Sundre torg.
Tips
We recommend ending the day by Ål bakery for freshly baked buns or Bear House Burger, a popular burger restaurant in the centre of Ål. Here you get tasty burgers, good coffee and a cosy atmosphere - a perfect place to end your trip.
