Torpo stave church

Torpo stave church is the only stave church in Hallingdal and was probably built around the middle of the 12th century.

It is one of Norway's oldest and best-preserved buildings from the Middle Ages.

Inside the church you will find a large, decorated canopy from the 13th century, one of the oldest painted decorations we have in the country. It depicts, among other things, Mary and John in mourning and a number of symbols from Christian tradition. A mysterious human figure is carved into the floor which, according to tradition, marks the grave of an old bishop.

Torpo stave church is a rich historical and artistic monument, providing a rare insight into the faith and craftsmanship of medieval Norway.
