Ål Town Museum

Ål Bygdamuseum is located in beautiful surroundings just a short walk from Ål town centre. The museum provides a vivid picture of rural life in Hallingdal over several hundred years. Here you can walk between authentic buildings and experience how people lived and worked in earlier times.

Ål Bygdamuseum is part of Hallingdal Museum and consists of more than thirty historic buildings gathered in one place. The yard is divided into four areas: Leksvolgarden, the upper yard, the farmstead and the homestead. Each section shows different aspects of life in Hallingdal, from farming and crafts to building practices and daily life.

The buildings at the museum include farmhouses, lofts, post houses, barns, smithies, saunas and cottages. Many of them originally stood on farms in Ål and the surrounding area, but were moved here to be preserved and displayed in a unified environment.

The museum is located high and free with a view of Ål and Hallingdalsdalen. The area is organised with trails and information boards that tell the story behind the buildings. Many visitors choose to walk from the town centre to the museum, a nice and quiet walk that combines culture and nature.

During the summer, various activities and guided tours are organised to bring history to life. Here, both children and adults can learn about the old crafts, tools and traditions that have characterised life in Hallingdal for generations.
