Rod fishing in Fødalen

In Fødalen, east of Ål municipality, you'll find a beautiful high mountain area with many small and large fishing lakes.

Here you can fish with a rod in several lakes such as Fødalsvatnet, Fossebrekka, Store og Vesle Klevavatnet, Jutultjødn and Svartetjødn - all within the boundaries of Fødalen Statsalmenning. The area offers varied fishing in true mountain nature, and is well suited to both short and longer trips.

Fishing waters

There are several lakes and streams within the Fødalen state alpine pasture that are ideal for angling:

  • Fødalsvatnet - a central and easily accessible high-mountain lake with good fishing opportunities
  • Fossebrekka - the outlet river from Fødalsvatnet, with fine current sections
  • Store and Vesle Klevavatnet - two high altitude lakes with beautiful locations and varying depths
  • Jutultjødn and Svartetjødn - smaller waters that are also included in the fishing licence area

In addition, fish were released in 2007 in the following waters:

  • Midtre Flågrunnsvatn
  • Nordre Halldalsvatnet
  • Systrondtjødn

Fine fish have been caught in these lakes in recent years and they are a good option for those who want to explore more of the area.

Fishing tips

Fødalen offers varied fishing in both water and current sections. It may be worth trying different waters during your trip - for example, Fødalsvatnet for even depth, and Fossebrekka or the outlets from Klevavatna for more movement in the water. Lures, worms and flies can all work well, depending on the conditions. High mountain weather can change conditions quickly, so it's a good idea to bring light equipment and be flexible in your choice of location and method.

Access & Parking

Access to Fødalen state alpine pasture is via the Bergsjø area in Ål municipality. From the centre of Ål, follow RV 7 east and turn off towards Vats and Bergsjø. After the toll road, you will arrive at the car park in Toviken. From here, follow the path further into the valley. The walking time to the fishing lakes varies, but you should allow 1-2 hours depending on your route and destination. The trail runs through high mountain terrain, is partly signposted and follows Klevaskardet and the south side of Store Klevavatnet.

Accommodation

A good starting point for rod fishing in Fødalen is Iungsdalshytta, a serviced DNT cabin located where Fødalen and Iungsdalen meet. The cabin has accommodation in rooms with 2-6 beds, offers home-cooked food in the summer season and is self-service the rest of the year. From here it's a short distance to several of the fishing lakes in the area, and you can easily combine your fishing trip with both hiking and mountain experiences. Access to the cabin is on foot from Toviken, or by boat transport by arrangement.
