Trout fishing in Votna

Votna is an exciting fishing area in beautiful surroundings, just a few kilometres east of Vatsfjorden in Ål municipality. The river flows through varied terrain and offers both calm stretches and rapids.

Votna is located approximately 2 kilometres east of the outlet of Vatsfjorden, along the county road towards Vats in Ål municipality. The terrain in the lower part of the river is difficult.

Fishing licences for rod fishing (worm, lure, spinner, fly) are sold via inatur.no.

  • The fishing season is from 15 May to 19 September
  • Catch reporting is required - forms can be found at inatur.no

Fishing tips

Votna has both calm sections and stretches with strong currents. This makes for varied fishing: try a worm or lure/spinner in calm zones, and a fly in more current-rich areas. Be flexible and use areas both above and below the high current sections.

Access & parking

Drive along the county road towards Vats ot parker about 2 km east of Vatsfjorden. There are several signposted trails leading down to the river, especially in the upper part. The lower part of the river has demanding terrain.

Accommodation

On the north side of Votna you will find Skarslia, which offers apartments of various sizes, with rental of both fishing equipment and bicycles, perfect for those who want to combine their fishing trip with other activities. On the south side is Ål Camping, with simple cabins, tent pitches and campervan parking close to the Hallingdalselva river. Both options give you a short distance to the fishing area.
