Historian Harald Dag Jølle has followed in the footsteps of the polar heroes - to the South Pole, through the infamous Northwest Passage and right up to the northern tip of Greenland. He has been on expeditions with researchers who capture and tag polar bears, track whales, monitor bird cliffs and explore the deep Arctic Ocean.
Now he's written a book about his travels to the outer edges of the Earth. He gives a vivid account of the magnificent and unforgiving landscape, of the questions today's scientists are trying to answer - and how our view of polar nature has changed in the face of climate change and human impact.
He shares stories of expeditions and pioneers who paved the way before us, and of today's polar researchers who are fighting to understand and protect nature in one of the planet's most vulnerable areas.
Harald Dag Jølle is a historian at the Norwegian Polar Institute. He has previously written a biography of Fridtjof Nansen and edited the major work Norwegian polar history.
