Utkast til sildefiske av Rolf Nesch

Memorial exhibition for Rolf Nesch

From 11 October to 23 November 2025, Galleri Syningen is marking the 50th anniversary of Rolf Nesch's (1893-1975) passing. The exhibition honours one of Norway's most innovative visual artists and shows both his own works and works by close artist friends.

The exhibition is based on Rolf Nesch's well-known work Herring Fishing, and the strong impressions he took with him from his trip to the Møre coast in 1938. The experiences of fishing, the sea and the coastal landscape became a lifelong source of inspiration for the artist - and laid the foundation for both graphic works and monumental material images.

In addition to Nesch's works, the exhibition also includes works by Olav Strømme and Sigurd Winge, both of whom travelled to Møre and shared his fascination with the sea and the people who lived off it. The exhibition provides a unique insight into the interplay between nature, history and art - and how Norwegian coastal culture has shaped our modern art history.

The art students at Ål kulturskule are contributing their own work inspired by Nesch, which will be exhibited in the lower foyer together with Ål municipality's graphic print of Sildefiske.

This is an exhibition for both art lovers and anyone who wants to learn more about an artist who managed to unite raw nature, strong depictions of people and innovative technique.
