Originally from Jørpeland, Johannessen runs a ceramics workshop and gallery in Øvregaten in Bergen, a historic workshop dating back to 1878 that has remained unchanged since then. He trained at the Norwegian School of Crafts and Design and the Bergen National Academy of the Arts, and has since established himself as one of the country's most prominent ceramicists.
He is particularly known for his sculptural candlesticks, often referred to as «baroque candlesticks». His work is based on antiquity and the Baroque, but clearly belongs to our own time. In addition to ceramic sculptures, Johannessen also works with drawing, charcoal, ink and screen printing in large formats.
All the works are made in earthenware clay, some also in porcelain. The artist often works with several candlesticks and sculptures at the same time, allowing series and themes to emerge over time. The process is characterised by thoroughness and precision, with slow firing and careful assembly - a craft that requires both patience and experience.
