The work combines old prayers, rhymes and rules about good weather and fertility with technical texts. The lush and beautiful soundscape has roots in both traditional music and contemporary music. The music springs from Jorun Marie Kvernberg's fiddle playing, but also from singing and vocal sound play, and bears traces of sound from her father Kvernberg's willow flute making.
Vardøger is performed by the chamber ensemble Song Circus, a vocal ensemble established in 2009, with Liv Runesdatter as artistic director. The ensemble works with experimental music, sound art, and audiovisual productions, and has an improvisational expression where the voice is used as an instrument. Song Circus has performed at festivals and concert venues across Europe, and their works have been shown and broadcast in several countries. The ensemble has also received international recognition for both record releases and film productions.
The performers in Song Circus are Liv Runesdatter, Ingeborg Dalheim, Anna Russnes and Signe Irene Time. Tuva Færden performs on the fiddle.
