Gunnar Idenstam en concert au festival Toulouse Les Orgues de Toulouse 2023

Organ concert with Gunnar Idenstam in Ål church

On Tuesday 24 September 2025, the audience will experience a very special organ concert in Ål Church, when the world-renowned organist, composer and folk musician Gunnar Idenstam visits the seminar "Kved opp! About folk music in the church."

Gunnar Idenstam (born in Kiruna in 1961) is an internationally recognised concert organist who combines the classical tradition with folk music and symphonic expression. He won the prestigious Grand Prix de Chartres improvisation competition in 1984 and has since given concerts all over the world.

As a performer, he was trained in the French organ tradition, including by the legendary teacher Marie-Claire Alain. He has a fondness for Bach and Dupré, but at the same time has developed his own unique style, a synthesis of art music, symphonic rock/pop and Nordic folk music.

At the concert in Ål, the audience will experience how he recreates the entire orchestra's sound colours on the organ, with transcriptions of composers such as Mahler and Ravel, alongside his own arrangements of Swedish folk music.

This will be a thrilling experience when Idenstam lets loose on Ål Church's baroque-inspired Kaliff organ.
