Thor Gotaas - A cheerful look at Norwegian skiing history

On Friday 10 October 2025, you can experience Thor Gotaas live at Tanken Arena in Ål. With humour, knowledge and storytelling, he takes the audience on a journey through the history of skiing - from the first thousand years of skiing in Norway to today's modern sports stars.

Skis have followed Norwegians for thousands of years - from the Sami who crossed the plateau to survive, to heroes such as Oddvar Brå and Petter Northug who have brought people together in front of the TV screen. In this lecture, Thor Gotaas tells the fascinating story of how skiing became both a national symbol and a source of proud sporting achievements.

Gotaas is a folklore researcher, author of 49 books and known for his vivid language and ability to mix the curious with the serious. He has interviewed hundreds of skiers, lumberjacks and freebooters, giving his audience unique stories that provide both insight and good laughs.

The lecture lasts approximately one hour with pictures and stories from Norwegian skiing history. Afterwards, there will be time for questions from the audience. The evening continues with an open bar, mingling and music in Tanken Arena.
