Since 2007, Ål Church has received funding from the Arts Council of Norway to integrate folk music into the service, an initiative that has made the church's celebrations unique and vibrant. The chants, composed by renowned folk musician Jo Asgeir Lie, act as the mainstay of the service and provide an authentic and atmospheric setting.
In addition, several of the festival's foremost musicians are involved, contributing live folk music that complements and enhances the texts and rituals. This fusion of traditional folk music and church liturgy creates a holistic experience that appeals to both believers and those interested in culture.
The project has not only strengthened the place of folk music in local traditions, but also opened up a new understanding of how music and faith can complement each other. Ål kyrkje and Folkemusikkveka are working closely together to develop this unique format, which each year brings both music and spirituality together in a moving way.
